Example: 68.5

Optional. Used only to show weight change so far.

Optional. Used to show the relevant trimester guidance.

Why pre-pregnancy BMI is used

Weight naturally changes during pregnancy. Guidance for gestational weight gain is based on BMI before pregnancy, not on a BMI calculated from current pregnant weight.

The pre-pregnancy categories used here follow the WHO adult bands used in the Maternal Dietary Guidelines for Malaysia 2023: underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25.0–29.9, and obese 30.0 or above. These intentionally differ from Malaysia’s adult obesity screening categories.

How the weight-gain ranges are shown

After pre-pregnancy BMI is calculated, the page shows the matching total gestational weight-gain range and the second- and third-trimester weekly average from the 2023 maternal dietary guidelines.

If current weight is entered, the page only shows the difference from pre-pregnancy weight. It does not label that change as adequate, excessive or insufficient.

Limitations

Twin pregnancies, certain medical conditions and individual clinical advice can change the suitable range.

This calculator does not diagnose pregnancy risk and does not affect takaful eligibility.

Common questions

Should I use my current pregnant weight to get a BMI category?

No. This page uses pre-pregnancy weight for the BMI category. Current weight is optional and only used to show change so far.

Why are these BMI bands different from the adult calculator?

Malaysia’s adult obesity screening CPG uses different cut-offs from the pre-pregnancy categories in the maternal dietary guidelines. Each calculator follows its own source.
